Casa Makai

Ileana

Excellent, 3 weeks ago

The place exceeded my expectations. It's surrounded by nature, quiet and private. The house had spacious areas that were very well ventilated and bright. Everything was as shown in the photos and more. I would definitely stay there again. It wasn't difficult to get there, and the directions to get there were very clear, with convenient access and relatively close to beaches and shops.

Absolutely beautiful place on the most peaceful beach. Our family had such a wonderful time watching sunsets, jumping waves and swimming in the pool. The pool is so great for small kids too as there is a very shallow end as well as a deep side. It made our time there even better with a pool so safe and fun for little ones. The communication was seamless and the house staff was so helpful. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay. We will be back!

Architect-designed house with natural ventilation above the forest. Wood predominates with Japanese inspiration. View of the sea, 5 minutes by car from the Majagual/Matilde beaches.

Casa Selva has everything you need to enjoy a good vacation in peace and quiet, and it has everything you need. We were able to bring our 3 pets with no problem.

Host Response

Thank you, thank you, Rodrigo!

I had a wonderful stay at this Airbnb. The host was incredibly friendly, responsive, and helpful throughout my trip. The place was exactly as described clean, comfortable, and well equipped with everything I needed. Check-in was easy, and the host made me feel very welcome from the beginning. The location was also great and convenient for exploring the area. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this place to other travelers!

My children, aged 10 and 14, my spouse and I spent 4 nights in this beautiful architect-designed house. The lush natural setting and the pool just a few steps away are excellent assets. However, some weak points affected our stay, notably the neighbor's music and, above all, the organization of communication: Multiple channels: The use of three messaging threads in addition to the Airbnb one has made communication more complicated. Lack of information: Due to our late arrival, which was communicated, written information would have been useful to locate the washing machine in the locked room or to know the equipment available (bodyboards, for example, in this room). Post-checkout follow-up: We were notified of a technical problem with the TV three days after our departure, although the cleaning lady was in the adjacent building 30 minutes before our checkout. This communication is the less pleasant aspect of this 3-week trip to Nicaragua

It was a gorgeous property. Enjoyed the private pool, the showers by the pool, the barbecue and the cabanas. The vibe was very cute , modern and it was tastefully done. Ac’s , Laundry worked really well. The caretaker Claudia on the property was very responsive and helpful and took good care of us. She responded to any potential issues right away. We also had her prep meals for us and pick up groceries which she did nicely for a good rate. The only thing is that the road access to the property was a little difficult. And there was water collected in a pot hole which some taxis were apprehensive to drive on. We did not rent a car which was good, but did find two taxi options who would come and pick us up and take us to where we need to go so that ended up not being a real problem for us. Overall, highly recommend this place !

Host Response

Thank you for such great feedback, Neha! Yes the road is a little rough from the highway with rainy season being here, but as you point out, worth the effort! Claudia had nothing but good things to say about your and your group, thank you!

Excellent place, very clean, very tidy and complete. You do need a 4x4 to get to the house, but it's totally worth it.

The Japanese inspired home was terrific. We stayed there 17 days in May 2026. Fortunately it was a dry May which reduced the bugginess, but was also had some very hot days. The home receives plenty of breeze on the hillside. And with both a ceiling fan and floor fan, we were able to feel comfortable at night. Howler monkeys were quite loud but typically only making their calls in the early evening and early morning. My wife and I are early risers so this didn’t affect me too much. During the week we pretty much only heard the wind, birds and monkeys. During the weekend the adjacent neighbor likes to crank up his music, and you only need to politely ask him to turn it down. Casa Culebra is the closest home rental to the swimming pool. It’s just across the road and won a few steps. Both the pool area and the home has an outdoor shower to cool off or remove sand from the beach. We mostly prepared our own meals. The kitchen is well stocked with sharp knives and outdoor BBQ.

Host Response

It was great having you, Tim.

We had a lovely stay at Laura's. The accommodation is spacious and tidy. The kitchen is well equipped. The outdoor space is very nice for dining in the heart of nature. Laura sent us clear check-in instructions. The last stretch of road to get to the property is a bit more challenging, but an SUV can get you there. You can also walk there if you're willing to sweat a bit (that's what we did). Access to the beach is easy, and Playa Maderas beach is great. Beautiful fine sand and relatively uncrowded. I would recommned this property.

We had a great experience at Casa Serena. Laura and Veronica were both very attentive both prior to arrival and during our stay. The home is in a more remote area outside of SJDS but with easy access to the city. The home has a beautiful view of the ocean and is surrounded by nature. While there, we saw monkeys, lizards, possums, and a few scorpions 🤪 The house was well equipped. Kitchen was easy to cook in, beds were comfortable. As described, the afternoons can get quite warm but we found a quick drive down the ocean around 3pm was the best way to beat the heat. One thing to note that I did not realize when booking (but is clearly noted in the listing), is that the home is made up of 3 separate buildings (two bedroom suites and the kitchen /living room space). For us, this was fine but if you have young children, this would be something to consider. One thing I would suggest is to ask for the cleaners to come more than once a week. Veronica was helpful in setting this up for us.

Absolutely stunning and extremely comfortable. We loved everything, these little houses are gems hidden on top the hill. The house is made out of concrete, wood and bamboo, a beautiful mix, and the walls are basically mosquito nets, so the wind is constantly blowing through every room of the villa. So despite the heat and the fact that there is no A/C, chilling inside the house in the middle of the afternoon is still very enjoyable. Only feedback we’d have is the absence of a guard to lift the gate up at night and early in the morning was problematic. We came back from San Juan around 10PM and had to scream up the hill for twenty minutes before a guard came to let us in. We then left early in the morning at 6:30AM and had the same problem but to get out. Still, despite this little inconvenience, our stay was amazing and we all highly recommend it !

Wow!! This place has one of the best ocean views I have seen with the most beautiful sunsets. Beautiful and luxurious, fully stocked kitchen and a refreshing clean pool. Easy to navigate to and from SJDS once you do the route once. Bed was super comfy and everything was clean. Just watch out for critters 🦂

Casa Tres Peces felt like home away from home. Comfy beds, full amenities including laundry, super fast WiFi….we had everything we needed to work from the house for a month. There is a new highway that makes transportation to activities quick and easy. Laura and our local host Vero, answered every question super fast, they provided tons of helpful recommendations, and were really friendly hosts. Everything about this stay was perfect, we will be back!

We stayed here for the month of March. The good: The house is lovely and larger than it looks in the photos. The open air aspect of the living and kitchen area makes it lovely in the heat of March without A/C. Bedrooms were stuffy. Vero- the onsite person- was very responsive. Small little porch was sweet to lay in the (tiny) hammock. Unfortunately during 95% of our stay there was MAJOR road work going on that we were not warned about- right at the bottom of the hill- every day we had to walk across a huge construction zone to access the beach- where they were building a new bridge and a new highway. Nothing was mentioned about this in the listing. We could not hear 'waves' - we heard construction- round the clock, early morning til way into the evening for the majority of our stay. We were not alerted before arriving. Generally, hosts will let you know in advance about nearby construction. We were rudely surprised and I would not have stayed here knowing this in advance.

Casa Selva is a beautiful house. Super great architecture. House was well equipped- kitchen was perfect for easy breakfast at home. We made smoothies, toast and coffee every morning. Would head to the beach for the day and then come back to enjoy a cerveza on the porch and watch the sunset. Nice living room area to watch movies as a family after dark. We really were only there to sleep, eat breakfast and relax in the evenings. So it suited our needs well. The location up on the hill was awesome for lingering sunset views. We did love the house and the hosts were very responsive, welcoming and helpful. A friendly PSA to anyone who is not a heavy sleeper- the house is VERY WINDY. The wind just blows and blows, crazy strong gusts coming from every which way and it made it impossible to get a good nights rest. It is an open air design in an extremely windy location. Know what you’re signing up for and be prepared for potentially restless sleep.

Host Response

Thank you so much, Elspeth—we’re really glad you and your family enjoyed the home, especially those sunset evenings and slow mornings. That’s exactly how Casa Selva is meant to be experienced. And thank you as well for noting the wind. You’re absolutely right—it can be quite strong at certain times of year, particularly from January through March when the seasonal winds move through the hills. At other times of year, it’s often very calm—sometimes with little to no wind at all. The open-air design does mean you experience those natural elements more directly, which many guests love, though we understand it can take some getting used to, especially for lighter sleepers.

We cannot say enough positive things about The Perch! Our group of 4 only spent 3 nights there, but it was absolute perfection. Laura and Veronica were incredibly helpful and always available to answer any questions we had. Also, if you’re keen on spending a quiet evening in, we would highly recommend hiring Erica (a local friend of our hosts) to come cook for you. Her food was authentic and one of the best meals we experienced during our trip to Nicaragua. We had such an amazing stay, and we would most definitely return!

The location is great. Close to beaches and 20 minutes to San Juan. There are houses nearby so be prepared to potentially hear the neighbors. We had trouble with the locks and the half bath toilet didnt work even after they came to service it. Also wasn't given a key to laundry room and was locked out the last night with our clothes in the dryer. Over all the stay was fine. Minor details only but would probably stay here again. All of that was worth the pool. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you need.

Host Response

Thanks for being a great guest, Steve. We've addressed these issues with the half bath toilet- thankfully, there were two other functional bathrooms. and are super sorry about you getting locked out of the laundry room! An oversight on our teams end.

Hi Laura, Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay! We truly loved our time here in Nicaragua. Your home was beautiful, comfortable, and the perfect place to relax and enjoy our trip. Everything was seamless from start to finish, and we really appreciated your hospitality and attention to detail. It made the whole experience stress-free and memorable for us. Thank you again for opening your home to us — we would absolutely love to come back someday! All the best, Jordan

This spot is very cool! We loved the views, the unit is large and beautiful and comes with many amenities. The pool is a very short walk off the back patio and relaxing, although we had to clean it often but I don’t think you can blame the hosts for the wind for knocking leafs into the pool all day. A few visitors like scorpions and spiders but they provided lots of spray and every time we found an unwanted guest, it was already dead from the spray. Again - you can’t fight your surroundings, you’re right in the thick of nature and all its beauty. We loved the howler monkeys and even had a loud kitty come by for hellos. Although we missed him (small and ginger) the last few days - hope he is ok! Only critique is the bed was quite hard. And the wind was a lot if you’re in the front room but the room by the patio was much better. Overall - loved it!

Overall, my family enjoyed our stay and loved the house. The location is amazing. Our 4 star rating is due to ant issues in the bottom bedroom. We had to kill over 50+ ants every night before bed due to a poorly constructed/insulated room. There were many cracks where ants were coming in along the walls and the windows & doors have major gaps as well. This isn’t an issue with being in the jungle as we had other critters visit us but the concern is around the amount of ants. Additional feedback: - replace screens on the windows so we can open them and not have wasps come in - the drains in a couple bathrooms weren’t working well resulting in standing water - more signage or pictures so guests can find the house easily as we had to call We absolutely loved the caretakers and they made the entire stay amazing. They were very proactive in helping us clean our room, sprayed raid, and sealed some of the holes in the room as best as they could to make it comfortable as possible.

Host Response

Thank you for taking the time to write, Jasmine. We’re so glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay and that the location and home were highlights of your trip. Because the house is located in a heavily forested jungle setting, insects—especially ants—are a normal part of life in this environment. The home is also designed to embrace the natural surroundings, which is why the entire upper floor is intentionally unscreened. This allows guests to open the doors and enjoy the wrap-around ocean views and fresh air, but it does mean that the home is more connected to the outdoors than a typical city property. That said, we truly appreciate you bringing the ant activity and other maintenance items to our attention. We will review the areas you mentioned, including the drains and gaps around windows and doors, to see where improvements can be made. We’re especially happy to hear that the onsite caretakers helped make your stay comfortable. They work very hard to take care of guests and the property, and your kind words will mean a lot to them. Thank you again for staying with us and for sharing your feedback.

We loved our stay! Lauras place is beautiful, has incredible views and was perfect for what we were looking for. We loved it so much we extended our time there and Veronica who looked after us during our stay was very responsive and helpful with absolutely everything we needed. Would 10/10 recommend you stay here for as long as you can and we would be so happy to come and visit again.

Host Response

Thanks for being such lovely guests Mike & Tam.

We had a great stay at Casa Serena. The accommodations have a beautiful view overlooking the ocean with amazing sunsets every night. The open air home is beautiful, rustic and fit into its natural surroundings very well. The pool was amazing, a must have at 30°. Casa Serena is in a very good location close to beaches, a resort, and restaurants. During our two week stay we saw many beautiful birds, howler monkeys, a few spiders, scorpions, and centipedes nothing that you wouldn’t expect living in the jungle. If you’re a light sleeper, I’d suggest earplugs.

Thank you for the wonderful stay at your house. It was truly a dream! We felt at home from the first moment and were able to enjoy the time to the fullest. Especially the atmosphere, the tranquility and the loving details made our stay unforgettable. Even if the way to the house is a bit challenging, it is definitely worth it – the arrival and the view are worth every effort. We highly recommend this place and would love to come back anytime. Thank you for everything and warm regards

Thank you so much!

The villa was absolutely gorgeous. Perched in the hills and overlooking the forest and sea, it was stunning. We had a great time and our hosts were very responsive. We had a wonderful massage, went horse back riding and had car service scheduled - all via our hosts’ recommendations. Overall a great stay. — We stayed mostly in the villa. If you want to visit the center, it is a 20 minute drive and you will need a 4x4 for the steep hills. There are no nearby restaurants or stores nearby that we were aware of.

Host Response

Thank you so much!

Great place, magical location and lots of nature. Unfortunately, it was super windy and because there are no glass windows, it was so loud at night that we could not sleep :/ it would be important to include in the description or let us know beforehand. Otherwise, the place is a great way to be alone and enjoy nature. Definitely drive with a 4x4 car. We first drove our Honda Navi motorcycles and we arrived, but we quickly decided to rent a car.

Host Response

Hi Valentina Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review for us. You took great care of the space. It’s very clear in the description and the images. We’ve hosted over 100 guests in the home and no one has been confused prior to this so please be sure to read the listing carefully. We also reiterated that the community required a 4wd or motorcycle even though it’s clearly in multiple spaces on the listing and your chose to arrive on a scooter.

We had a phenomenal time at Casa de Serena by balcones, waking up to that view undisturbed was a dream. It's a sprawling property for a couple and it really felt magical. If you do have an option to fly in through Managua definitely do so, Liberia is far more stressful, as the the border crossing can take hours and requires expensive private taxis to get back for your flight. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful respite, I wish I was still there.

Host Response

So glad you enjoyed, Batya!

COCKROACHES, POOR HYGIENE, HOUSE IN POOR CONDITION, PANIC AND MORE. The house is spacious from the moment you enter. The problem is when you enter the rooms. The advertisement shows clean, pleasant rooms, but when you enter you are hit by a strong smell of moisture and old wood. The walls are full of mold (mold is harmful to health) the lamps on the night tables are broken, the door handles were in poor condition, the light switches too. The sheets were stained, faded. The master bedroom bathroom had a kind of "planter" that was stained, dirty, with dead cockroaches, stones and was generally disgusting. The air conditioners make an unbearable noise all night, if you are sensitive to noise at night you will definitely not be able to rest. The other main room was worse, a family member was trapped for an hour without a cell phone and panicked in the bathroom. Get ready to see a lot of cockroaches, the host says they are "normal"

Host Response

We want to clarify a few key points for future guests. Upon arrival, your group brought additional unregistered guests beyond the reservation, exceeding the home’s capacity. As a goodwill gesture, we waived the additional guest fees. During your stay, you repeatedly focused on a bathroom plant shown in listing photos that had since died, and referred to this as “false advertising.” As this is a live plant, its condition can naturally change over time. Regardless, we addressed every legitimate concern you raised immediately (including the lamp and switch), and our team remained responsive throughout your stay. We also need to note that our staff experienced unacceptable cleanliness and conduct, including used toilet paper being left on the bathroom floor (despite bins being provided), and rude interactions with our cleaner and meet-and-greet support. Regarding insects: this is a tropical, coastal environment, and occasional insects can occur, but the home is regularly cleaned and maintained. We take cleanliness seriously and do not agree with the characterization in this review. We stand by our property and the many positive experiences guests have had here, and we wish you all the best.

Let me just start this by saying how amazing Laura, Veronica and the rest of the team are. Communication was top notch. This amazing host was so flexible even when a situation arose she was quick to make an alteration in my booking, and still being warm and empathetic toward my situation. It’s with great dismay I didn’t get to meet Laura in person I can already tell what type person she is. I hope one day I get to stay at one of your amazing properties and I hope that one day is soon. Thank you so much for being selfless and so helpful.

The house was gorgeous. It was also very functional, with everything having its place. There are no glass windows, only mosquito screens, allowing fresh air to flow through the house at all times. It was pristine and perfectly clean. Laura was very helpful and professional. One minor consideration, not directly related to the house itself: unbeknownst to us, the area is currently undergoing major transformation. New roads are being built and some roads are blocked, which can make getting around a bit tricky ... but the house itself is truly a wonderful place to stay.

Host Response

Thank you, Juliette! It was so great hosting you all! Yes, the new coastal road is being built in the general area- we look forward to being about to travel more easily in the area!

Amazing stay at Casa Colina, stunning house with a clean pool and super responsive staff. The location was ocean accessible via a 10 minute drive and the pool a 2 minute walk from the house. Please note that in addition to 4 wheel drive being absolutely necessary, strong driving skills and calm nerves are super helpful in reaching the house. That being said, completely worth it for the view, hot water, house aesthetics, and accessibility to playa maderas. Visit cafe machete for brunch!!

Incredible experience in the Jungle! Close to beaches and restaurants if you have some sort of transportation. Bugs were not bad at all and there was a very nice breeze.

Thank you for being such a great guest Steve!

Amazing 🤩 to say the least. Beautiful layout, beautiful view. Theres a beach about a 10 mins walk down the hill and each side has beautiful views to enjoy your time. The host was responsive, accommodating, and helpful through and through. Would 100% go back. I would highly suggest arranging the chef, Erika, to come and cook you a meal, soooooo delicious, and she was so sweet too; and decently priced considering how tasty the meal was. Don’t buy groceries, ask for Erika; much better and prices balance out. We LOVED this property. LOVED IT 😍🤩🤯☀️🥰

A truly exceptional place! The house is splendid, perfectly equipped and bathed in fresh air thanks to natural ventilation — no air conditioning needed here. We fully experience the jungle: some amazing insects, but it's all part of the charm of the place. I initially received directions that were no longer up to date, which made me get lost while walking to the beach. Fortunately, Veronica responded to my messages and guided me as best she could. The construction noise was present at the beginning of my stay, but the last two nights were magically quiet. On the other hand, a party in the area lasted until 3 am — and the presence of several drunk people while I was alone made me a little insecure. I didn't expect it, especially since the rules mention a curfew at 10 p.m. Despite these unforeseen events, the place remains beautiful and unique. It feels really exotic.

Host Response

Gracias, Melissa!

This spot is so cool! You need 4x4 and some clearance for sure. We were moved from another home to here and this place was so cool! Monkeys 🐒 in the trees all around the house, cool birds, a view of the ocean and a super clean place. Big home for 2 people and definitely a perfect spot for 2 couples. I will warn you you can hear the coast highway construction from pretty much anywhere near there. They worked 7 days a week starting at 6am till about 8pm. Home was fully stocked. Gated community with security and close to the beach. We would definitely stay here again.

Always nice to host you!

Incredible place to stay! Reviews speak for themself on this property. The construction noise wasn't bad and coincidentally cause families of howler monkeys to come through the area each morning. There was one power outage , but the house has battery backup on the refrigerator etc. Cheese tour at Las Delicias de Francia, a nearby farm, highly recommend. Laura was a great host, both responsive and proactive to let us know about the power. The other reviews cover it all. It is a serene environment away from the hustle of SJDS. The nearby restaurants were great with fair prices. The outdoor area is where we spent most of our time. That pool is massive and so relaxing. Staff also was A+ and always checked when/if they could come on property. This is huge as many other places we have stayed in CenAm have an onsite gardener or other staff always on property. This place has privacy.

Laura super friendly and was quick to respond during the reservation and Verónica always pending during our stay and super friendly as well. We are very pleased and would certainly love to return.
