Sunset Vista-Private Cabin

Sandra

Excellent, 5 months ago

The place worked well for us. Close to town and cloud forest reserves. They were very helpful in setting up tours for us. The “cabins” were more like apartments with two units per townhouse (upstairs and downstairs) and four units side by side. It may be a translation issue. The kitchen was adequate but minimal. All in all, an incredible view, very clean with helpful staff.

Monteverde Reserve was literally next door! Beautiful surroundings. Our only issue was little hot water upon our arrival. Apparently the tank didn’t fill up??? We had to wait it out so that all three of us could shower. The toaster was broken and it was replaced the next day. There are a bunch of steps so b prepared to haul your luggage down to the house and back up again. Although the property is located on 12 acres, there r no trails directly from the house - just jungle.

Beautiful, quiet spot. The windows and wood decor were beautiful. The upstairs bathroom situation is a little complicated: main floor bedroom/bath no problem but the upstairs has two bedrooms and one en suite bathroom-awkward to access for that third bedroom. Toilet flush is very weak and before we even used it, we noticed weak flush. It was Sun (no plumber) so we used the plunger (didn’t really help). Chris sent plunger the next day and it seemed to help some. Kitchen is ‘rustic’ but our family didn’t mind.

This cabin is walking distance to the Cloud Forest, which is great but also means you need to traverse the long, dirt road when going anywhere else in town. It is sparsely decorated, dark, with minimal amenities. Definitely a cabin and not a house - but exceptionally clean. One of the guides we booked through the host did not show up leaving us scrambling to get one - another guide helped us by calling a friend in. It was stressful and we lost time in the process, messing up the rest of our schedule for the day.

Host Response

We would like to clarify a few important points about this experience to provide better context for future guests. The tour to the Cloud Forest was properly confirmed in advance on our end, as we do with all our providers. Unfortunately, the assigned guide did not show up at the agreed time, which was a situation completely outside of our control. We fully understand how frustrating this must have been. It is also important to mention that the person who ultimately assisted you was not unrelated, but the guide’s brother, who is part of the same working team. He stepped in after noticing the internal mistake and helped resolve the situation as quickly as possible. Regarding communication, we take this very seriously and are already working on improving how we share guides’ contact information with our guests to help prevent situations like this in the future. We truly appreciate your positive comments about the cleanliness of the cabin, as this is one of our top priorities. We sincerely regret that this external issue affected your overall experience.

Check-in at the front desk was informative, and we were also able to book the private Nebelwald tour with a very experienced guide. The property is located right at the entrance to the nature park, very beautiful, in the middle of the forest. Compared to the very touristy Monteverde, it's a dream. You should definitely travel by your own car. It feels a bit like being in a cabin in the foothills of the Alps. Everything made of wood, with wonderful views of the forest. Great for a family or very close friends, as the wooden construction means that some areas are quite noisy, and one of the upstairs bedrooms does not have its own bathroom.

We stayed here with our family which included three young kids - everyone loved the experience! The kids will tell you their favorite part was how comfortable the beds were. We were out most of our days but did down time at the house during the day and the favorite for my husband and I was sitting in the upstairs recliners with the windows open listening for birds and watching the clouds pass over. The house is peaceful and quiet first thing in the morning then again around dinner time - there is quite a bit of road traffic outside being near the entrance to the cloud forest reserve (it didn’t bother us, just something to know). We enjoyed morning and sunset walks along the road and visiting the hummingbird cafe across the street. Host helped us with local recommendations and was easy to message with about check out instructions! We would happily stay here again!

...it seems to me that it is the best location that can be found if your destination is Montevetde Cloun Forest: 50 meters from the access to the park. Each in the middle of the forest, which makes it a unique experience. In addition to the lush vegetation, the location of the house allowed us to enjoy the fauna of the place: pigeons, coyotes and many birds. The house is comfortable and I think it exceeds the description and photographs. Thank you!!!

The cabin is perfectly positioned to walk to the Monteverde Cloud Forest reserve and the Hummingbird Café. If photography is your thing you can spend as long as you want capturing the hummingbirds with no obligation to go into the shop or café. There is a very small amount of traffic that you can hear going to and from the reserve but in no way is that a nuisance, it is very faint. And once the reserve has closed for the day it is incredibly quiet and peaceful. The house itself is exactly as described, it was incredibly clean and I have to say the shower was one of the best ones I’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world. I think my only criticism is something that’s been mentioned in other reviews; the kitchen is equipped with a kettle and toaster and coffee machine but ideally there should be a few more pans provided. Just one sauce pan and two frying pans would make cooking for six people possibly a bit tricky. But that is something that could easily and cheaply be rectified.

Chris' house was exactly as described, both by Chris and the reviews. It is dark and poorly lit, with minimal kitchen supplies, so we were very prepared for that. If your goal is to spend time in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, you cannot get any closer than this house and for that reason, I loved it. We had been told by a tour company that we would have to get our tickets at the parking lot/ticket office, below us on the mountain, which would be a bit inconvenient because we did not have a vehicle. We were very pleased to find out that we could get our entrance tickets on line and walk only a few feet from our house into the Cloud Forest. We spent one night in the town of Santa Elena and it was fairly busy and noisy so this was beautiful to be in such a quiet setting. We were also delighted to find out that a shuttle runs back and forth about 4 times a day that would take you into the town to a few different locations, so getting around was not difficult. We really enjoyed our stay.

Our stay was perfect from start to finish. Communication was excellent before, during, and after our stay. The place is exactly as shown in the photos and precisely where it says it is. One of the biggest highlights is the location: it is within walking distance of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which makes it ideal for anyone looking to stay immersed in nature, away from the hustle and fully surrounded by the forest. If your goal is to be close enough to walk to the reserve, this place is absolutely perfect. The house has all the amenities needed to comfortably accommodate six people, with three bedrooms and three beds, making it ideal for groups. At the same time, as was the case for our visit, it is also perfect for couples looking for a quiet, relaxing space—whether to read, unwind, or simply enjoy the surroundings. Despite being in a remote location, the house feels safe, well-prepared, and well-maintained.

We really enjoyed our stay. It felt very special to be this close to the Monte Verde park. We were busy with wonderful activities in the area. From horse back riding in a finca to the hanging bridges, we will never forget the unique views. We also got to tour Curi Cancha with Chris’s brother, Roy. I highly recommend organising a tour with him. After 26 years of being a guide, he still has so much passion and consideration for wildlife and nature. We got to see with our own eyes all sorts of animals and plants.

This was a beautiful property to stay at. My family of 5 spent Christmas Day at this cabin and it was a dream. The views were gorgeous and we were able to easily see the wild life. The kitchen could have used a bit more cooking supplies, but we were able to make due with what was there and cooked a delicious Christmas dinner. Chris and his team were very informative, they helped us to book an excursion and supplied us with a map of the town.

Location is absolutely unbeatable. Literal steps away from the Cloud Forest Preserve. Nice views of the mountain. Surrounded by the jungle. We saw lots of birds, a coati, and several cool bugs. The beds were comfy. The water was hot and high pressure. Very cool property for a Monteverde trip. Three complaints we had: There was no service or guestbook on property. This made for a hassle on site. We didn't have the lockbox code saved so had to drive around the corner for service. Then when in the house, there was no information/guestbook about wifi. So this required us to again drive away to get the wifi in order to get the code. The 2nd thing was the kitchen. The appliances were great but the cookware and serving dishes were lacking. For a place that can sleep 6+, the pots and pans were quite small for trying to feed a large group dinner. Cooking utensils were also poor. No wooden spoon for storing. Third, the garbage can was small, and had no recycle/compost/etc available.

I don’t usually write long reviews, but this place truly deserves one. This lodge is absolutely magical—truly one of a kind—and it’s the closest stay you can get to one of the most magnificent cloud forests on the planet. Monteverde is known for its lodges and cabins, and this property embodies that perfectly. The cabin is beautifully constructed and fully immersed in the forest, with wildlife crossing the property regularly. If you stay here, expect a true cloud forest experience: the soothing sounds of the Atlantic trade winds, animals calling throughout the day and night, and crisp, cool air that feels like natural air conditioning. In fact, it can get cold—so keep the windows closed at night if you don’t want the “AC” too strong. This isn’t a Hilton—and it doesn’t need to be. It’s the perfect place for the environment it’s in, offering an authentic, unforgettable experience that aligns beautifully with Monteverde’s natural charm. I’ll never forget my time here. The house is very nice and in the middle of the forest. I would put better lighting in the house, both in the common areas and in the rooms, for example our bedside tables did not have lamps. Another thing to improve are the directions on how to get there: Amanda attended us at Rainbow, very lovingly, but she gave us a paper map drawing of how to get there, which was impossible to follow and we clearly got lost (the house is about 25 minutes from Rainbow, which is where they give you the key). Nowadays, it's best to give an accurate Waze/Google Maps location, with photos of the gate of the house we have to look for. We only had a sheet with a map that wasn't very accurate and it was very difficult to find the house.

This place was incredible. It was exactly what we were looking for. - It isRIGHT next to the large monteverde preserve. We drove the mile or so down the road to the reception area, got our tickets, then drove back up to the house. Put the car in the garage, and then walked less than a 1/4 mile to the preserve entrance. - It isSecluded. It is NOT near town. It is quiet and peaceful. All we heard at night was the rain and the birds. - If you watch, especially in the morning you are going to see wildlife. - It has everything you need to cook and store food. - The water is clean. We did not worry about drinking from the faucet. - It has windows lining the two levels that face out the back towards the forest where the sun comes up.

It was one of the best Airbnb's we've stayed in. The cabin was beautiful, well cared for, very clean, well equipped and with the best view in all of Monteverde. It is very few meters from the village but far away to be quiet. We went around the village and saw several accommodations but this was the best, people even go that way to see the sunset because it has the best views. Gloriana, Amanda and the whole team were super cute. They made us very good recommendations and were always attentive. They help you realize the tours, you don't have to worry about anything. If you like privacy and a quiet and beautiful place this is the place, I recommend the cabanas on the upper floors so they can better see the landscape and the sunset.

The cabin was exactly what we were expecting and more. Very private, next to Monteverde cloud forest reserve. The cabin was well equipped for all of the dining we didn’t do in town. We cooked several meals, the coffee maker was great. The “yoga” room was incredible. Listening to the night sounds, and in the day watching the bird show and family of coatis roM the grounds. The park was 100m away. You do need to get your pass at main park entrance 1 km below the house. It is not a big deal to run back down but easier to buy before you get there. The staff were responsive and helped us to arrange even last minute plans for a night walk, hanging bridges and zip lining above the canopy. Thank you for showing us this amazing place

This is an excellent location for those truly interested in the Cloud Forest, you simply cannot be any closer! It is accurately described as a cottage/cabin, and with that comes a little more of a "rustic" feel. Accommodations were clean and beds super comfy. Overall was a little "bare boned", not much as far as cooking utensils, but we did appreciate the coffee maker. I think we just a few simple upgrades ( lets talk lighting ) this would be a 5/5 location. Overall happy with the listing, easy check out etc.

Honestly this place is perfection for anyone looking to spend time in the eco reserve! I will say we didn’t pull up the photos ahead of time and reception is spotty toward the end, so it took us a BIT to find it. (Totally on us!) But host was AMAZING and super communicative, and even offered to send someone to guide us in! Once we got back to service I took a screenshot of what to look for and it was easy peasy. (So just do better than we did and plan ahead!) Gorgeous house, incredibly peaceful, and literal steps from the Cloud Forest!

The area is beautiful with lots to do. Roads in and out are rough but fine in a 4x4 and got easier through the days we were there. The cabin is simple, views beautiful, and met our basic needs. Definitely recommend arriving in the daylight as we got lost trying to find the house without cell service. It all worked out fine though! Lots of local recs from the folks at rainbow lodge when we checked in. So much delicious and fresh food in the area! Thanks for a great stay!

Our experience was multifaceted. Checking in at the Rainbow Valley Lodge was relatively easy, though the receptionist helping us didn't actually know where the house was. The lack of instruction made finding the home a little tricky, but we figured it out. The best part of the house, of course, is its proximity to the Cloud Forest Reserve. (Pre-purchase your admission so you can walk right in!) Even in the yard, you'll see so many species of bird, peccary, monkey, and more – plus the world's most friendly coatis. It's clear that some guests have been feeding them because of how fearless they were. The house itself is gorgeously made of Costa Rican wood, but it needs some love and maintenance. I'll echo the sentiments of other reviewers: At the very least, please swap the lightbulbs for warmer ones, put up some decorations, and throw in a fire extinguisher and smoke detector, especially because it's a relatively remote, fully wooden home.

Beautiful serene location hidden right next to the entrance to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Incredible views of the forest and wildlife with huge windows throughout. Super peaceful. We loved watching the coatis and birds from the living room and seeing the clouds roll in and out throughout the day. The house is old and a bit funky but has a lot of character and the beds were very comfy. Chris and his team were super helpful and welcoming and provided us with tour opportunities and helpful tips.

The check in was a little bit challenging because the key was not left in the lockbox but Chris responded right away and resolved the situation. A very private location away from the town and next to the Forest preserve, perfect for our needs. A surprise visit of a Quetzal in the tree our first morning there was a special delight! and a fun visit by a pack of 15 collared peccary who came for a group nap on the lawn one afternoon was entertaining. I loved sleeping surrounded by the sounds of the night insects and wind in the trees.

Like are you kidding me? This place is literally out of a fairytale. Absolutely gorgeous surroundings, literally right next to the entrance to the reserve, and wildlife all around! The place is a little isolated and the roads getting there are not in the greatest condition, but absolutely worth the venture. I would definitely recommend arriving before sundown because it was very dark and hard to see when we arrived, but in the daylight it’s easy to locate. Hardly any mosquitoes! WiFi worked beautifully and the check in desk had so many recommendations. It truly felt like we were in a little paradise. Host was super friendly and helpful. Gorgeous wood paneling, beautiful views, if your dream is to visit the Cloud Forest, I can’t think of a better place to stay!

Our stay began when we checked in at the Rainbow Valley Lodge. Gloriana greeted us with so much excitement. She was full of so many suggestions for activities, things to see and places to eat. It was easy to tell how much she loves what she does. She’s local to Monteverde and studies ecotourism, so take her word on her recommendations. She gave us great directions on how to navigate through Santa Elena to our cabin. When we arrived to the cabin, the peccaries in the yard ran off into the forest. We couldn’t believe that we were literally just a few feet from the edge of the Cloud Forest—you could not stay any closer to the entrance to the Cloud Forest than here. The rustic vibe of the cabin with the sense of isolation in the jungle really made the experience remarkable. You could not ask for anywhere more private than here. We loved the mountain views and watching the coati pass through the yard over our morning coffee. The cabin had everything we needed during our stay.

Exactly what we wanted - peaceful and relaxing. We were enchanted by the evening and early morning views and wish we could have stayed longer. The bed was comfortable and we were walking distance away from the entrance to Monteverde Cloud Forest. (NOTE: tickets to Monteverde Cloud Forest must be purchased at the ticket office/parking lot and NOT at the entrance to the cloud forest.) Also, we arrived after dark and the steps to the house were a little dark, have a flashlight (or phone light) handy to help you find your way.

The house is beautifully located next to the entrance. So close even that you have to go back down the mountain to buy your access card for the park. The house is very nice and equipped with the comforts. But the highlight is really the location with the garden. Because the sun shines in the garden, many animals come to this. We saw monkeys, wild boars, nasal bears and a coyote during the stay! And all that in the garden.

Christian’s place was incredible. The views and wildlife made it hard to leave but town isn’t far away. The cafe and cloud forest reserve is just a walk up the hill (just make sure you buy your ticket the day before down the hill so you can walk in the next morning). The only issue is the lighting, I have seen this in other reviews and hoped it would have been updated. All white LED lights - should be switched to soft white or yellow!

Great stay! Very clean and walking distance to town. Chris also organized amazing tours for us. Only downside is check in was a little chaotic with everyone trying to get into their air bnbs at same time.

The Airbnb is as described. If you want the secluded forest getaway and conveniently next to the hummingbird (live hummingbirds) cafe then this is the right cabin for you. It’s very clean and yes you are in the forest so don’t be surprised about critters outside it’s just normal. Chris was super responsive with messages and helped everywhere he could. The check in process was easy with his wife greeting us and there’s a cute puppy in the pick up key location which was a nice surprise. Fantastic Airbnb and would highly recommend.

Lovers of nature, Chris's house is a setting in the middle of paradise. Very comfortable and spacious, it is a refuge to recover hikes in the Monteverde reserves and the rain that often falls. It's best to come by 4x4 because the path to the Monteverde reserve is bumpy. The house is beautiful and nice, we loved it. The views are beautiful. A few wasps scared us a little, but Chris's team quickly came to an end. Would definitely stay again.

We had a wonderful experience at Chris' location. We loved the beautiful views every morning and being in the cloud reserve was such a unique experience, one in which we won't soon forget. Thank you again for the hospitality!

We had a great stay at Chris’ house. The location and surroundings are unbeatable. Host was responsive and helped us book a night and day tour with incredible and super knowledgeable local guides (the best on our trip). Definitely more of a “nature/minimalist ” with incredible views during the day. Walkability to the park and the hummingbird cafe are such incredible features. Sitting in the yoga room with a cup of coffee and reading was such a treat. The house as described in many other reviews is made of wood. Beautiful, but lots of creaking and readily hear across walls/floors, so just good to be aware. As a result, think ideally you sleep in the two upstairs bedrooms as the bottom one was pretty noisy/creaky. Kitchen had just the basics, which was fine for us, but would be hard to cook a huge meal. Would not recommend for people with mobility issues or with small children (steep steps to get down to the house and also no railing on the stairs to walk upstairs).
