Casa del Sol is an iconic Akumal landmark with a distinctive atmosphere. Located directly on Yal-Ku Lagoon, this eclectic home—once owned by members of The Grateful Dead—combines privacy, character, and ample space for families or groups.
Funky décor, celebrity history, and four bicycles for guest use add to the home’s relaxed and playful appeal. Optional chef service packages are also available.
The Space
Casa del Sol offers something especially rare in Akumal: private access to the clear waters of Yal-Ku Lagoon.
The property features colorful interiors, tropical gardens, a private swimming pool, a waterfront palapa, and several outdoor areas where guests can relax and spread out.
Inside, the main living room provides a comfortable gathering space, while the full kitchen makes preparing meals at home convenient. An outdoor half kitchen is also available, making it especially practical when guests are spending the day by the pool and lagoon.
Five bedrooms are located throughout the main house, separate casita, and tower. This layout gives families and groups a comfortable balance between shared spaces and private sleeping areas.
The home also has a distinctive connection to local history and has long been known as the “Grateful Dead House.”
Optional Cook Service
Optional cook service is available for a more relaxing stay. Meal packages include two meals per day for up to 10 guests:

- Five days: US$800
- Seven days: US$1,100
- Single meals: US$9 per person, per meal
Groceries, shopping expenses, and transportation costs are additional. Cook service must be arranged in advance.

We had an amazing stay at Casa de Sol. Our group consisted of three adults and five children aged 10–13, and the property met all of our needs exceptionally well. The pool was wonderful, and the lagoon access was a real highlight. The house was comfortable, well-equipped, and exactly as described. The location was fantastic. Being at the end of town made it quieter than staying in the centre, while still providing easy access to everything Akumal has to offer. We made great use of the bikes, cycling to the beach, exploring the area, and heading into town for dinner. Everything felt very safe. We were welcomed by the owner, who was warm and accommodating. Alex, the concierge, was outstanding throughout our stay, helping with recommendations, bookings, transportation, and rental cars. The housekeeping and laundry staff were also excellent and made us feel genuinely welcome. This was one of those rare Airbnb experiences where everything the listing promises turns out to be true. There were 10 of us for a 50th birthday party and the house was absolutely ideal and exceeded expectations. The lagoon was gorgeous (tip - go early or late as it does get busy but that isn't a bother when your hanging around the house as it is just far enough away to give you privacy) The outdoor living area was so perfect, people can be in the pool, playing cards, in the kitchen and all still feel like your together. The beds were comfortable, washrooms clean, everything worked and the staff were so kind. Trip of a lifetime!

The house is spectacular and is very well located, a short walk from the lagoon and with easy access by bicycle to Akumal beach. Scott was always attentive, helping us at all times with logistics, which made our stay even more comfortable. Several times we asked for the food service offered by Ovidio and his wife: everything delicious and with a quality that far exceeds the nearby restaurants, whose prices are usually quite high. A great touch was also the complimentary beers in the fridge, which we really appreciated when we arrived. As the only point to improve, the house does not have a dishwasher or washing machine. Otherwise, everything was a 10. Highly recommended!

Casa del Sol was perfect for our family vacation-the open space and access to the lagoon is truly wonderful. Merily and Ovidio are absolutely great , they cleaned and cooked for us which made our stay truly relaxing. We will definitely be back!

We had a fantastic friendcation with 11 ladies. We loved everything about the house --the lagoon, the pool, the communal areas. Having a kitchen accessible to the pool is especially wonderful. Obidio and Mary, the caretakers of the house, are very friendly and cooked us six fantastic meals. From top to bottom this was a great experience and we look forward to coming back.
