Woods: Wood cabin, Balgue, Ometepe Island
Nestled in the peaceful foothills of Volcano Maderas, this handcrafted wooden cabin offers a serene retreat away from the busy town life. Despite its tranquil setting, it is just a 5-minute walk from the town center and 10 minutes from the renowned Hacienda Finca Magdalena. Ideal for families or groups, the cabin includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, balconies, and a living room.
The house is surrounded by lush tropical forests rich in wildlife and nature. It features extensive gardens with a brick oven, an outdoor washing area, fruit trees, and a variety of edible plants available for guests to enjoy. The living room has a 42-inch TV, and the outdoor deck provides seating and a double hammock. The fully equipped kitchen includes a blender, toaster, French press, and all the essentials.
There is plenty of space for children, pets, and adults to explore and appreciate the diverse flora and fauna. Visitors often spot rare birds flying overhead and hear howler monkeys crossing the driveway.
The cabin is located at the base of Volcano Maderas, which forms one half of Ometepe Island, contrasting with Volcano Concepcion on the other side. Ometepe sits in the middle of the largest lake in the Central American tropics and was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2010.
The property lies on the main road just outside the town of Balgue, the island’s third largest and a popular destination for travelers. Balgue is known for its focus on eco-tourism, sustainable development, fresh local cuisine, and a relaxed lifestyle.
The house is a 5-minute walk from a public bus stop and close to several restaurants. It offers easy access to the island’s top attractions and assistance with booking tours and activities.
Guests have full access to the private cabin and gardens. The house offers a comfortable space for cooking, relaxing, and socializing. The location is perfect for couples, families, friends, or solo travelers seeking peace within a nature reserve.
To reach the property, follow the road from Balgue’s center, cross the Puente Balgue bridge, and find the cabins on the right side of the main road. Wooden signs for Selvist, La Bambouseraie, or Bona Fide indicate you have gone about 100 meters too far.
The entire property is set within a lush tropical forest teeming with wildlife, including birds, butterflies, bees, monkeys, frogs, toads, spiders, and small bats. Occasionally, these animals may seek shelter inside the cabin. The hosts use natural remedies to manage these creatures and are happy to share this information upon arrival.
None of the wildlife on the property is aggressive or harmful to humans. The only venomous animal on the island is the timid coral snake, which is rarely seen. This rich biodiversity contributes to Ometepe’s status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
