Location and Activities
Tapalpa is considered a magical town. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word “tlalpan,” meaning “land of colors.”
Enjoy walks through the forest, cycling, horseback riding, and visits to Tapalpa’s nearby attractions, including waterfalls, rock formations, trout fishing areas, and more.
Waterfall “El Salto del Nogal”
El Salto del Nogal is located 14 kilometers from central Tapalpa via Highway 437. A four-wheel-drive vehicle, sport utility vehicle, or truck is recommended. Once you reach the descent area, you must leave your vehicle and continue on foot for several minutes to reach the waterfall.
Bring water, snacks, a hat, comfortable clothing, and sturdy shoes. A walking stick or cane may be helpful during the descent and ascent. Although the trail is well marked, it is a dirt path with stones that can be challenging in some sections.
The route is not recommended for older adults, small children, or people with asthma, knee problems, or poor physical condition. If you arrive early, local guides may be available to accompany you for no more than $200 pesos.
The journey can be demanding, but the surrounding landscapes and views of the ravines and waterfall make it worthwhile.
Ekopark
Ekopark is a 22-hectare adventure park located at kilometer 6.5 on the road to San Gabriel. Activities include:
- Zip lines
- Hanging bridges
- Gotcha
- Climbing and rappelling
- Hiking
- 360-degree swing
Admission costs $30 pesos, with an additional charge for each activity. After paying for your first activity, $20 pesos of the admission fee will be returned.
The park has guides, photographers, bathrooms, and food and drink vendors. It is recommended that you call before visiting, as large groups from companies or families may limit availability.
Depending on the number of activities, a visit typically takes at least half a day or a full day. The park is suitable for all ages, but outside food and drinks are not permitted.
Ekopark is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Natural Park “Los Frailes”
These rock formations resemble praying friars and form the highest hill in the area, making them an excellent natural viewpoint. Reaching the summit is a significant challenge for experienced climbers.
Activities are available for visitors with varying levels of physical ability, including:
- Zip lines
- Rappelling
- Climbing
- All-terrain vehicle rides
- Walking trails
Admission costs $50 pesos, with additional charges for activities. Comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended because the climate is cold.
The Big Stones
The Big Stones are located in the Valley of the Riddle, a green and majestic area believed by some to have energetic powers. The rocks may have fallen there thousands of years ago and are also known as “extraterrestrial rocks.”
Some formations feature pre-Hispanic inscriptions, leading some people to believe that ancient cultures used the area as a ceremonial center. The site is approximately 5 kilometers from Tapalpa.
Tours by bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, and horseback can be arranged in the town center. Visitors can also enjoy:
- Photography
- Zip-line activities
- Rappelling
- Views of the nearby river
There is no admission charge, although a voluntary contribution is requested for cleaning and conservation of the valley. The site has a food area, bathrooms, and space to rest. Guests may bring their own food and drinks.
Guest Access
Guests have access to the entire property except for the cellar, which remains closed.

100% recommended. The fact that each room has its own bathroom is a plus, as is the kitchen with the grill and pizza oven. It's a gem. We had a very pleasant time there. The fireplaces and the campfire area are excellent. We will definitely return. The whole family loved it.
