Location and Local Area
The developing north side of Caye Caulker is growing quickly, but it remains more rustic and separated from the island’s nightlife and main activities.
Driftwood is approximately 1 mile from The Split by bicycle or on foot. From The Split, a local ferry takes about two minutes to cross to the village on the south side, where most of the island’s main activities are located. The ferry closes at 10:00 p.m.; please confirm the schedule with the boat captain on the day of travel if you plan to stay out later.
There are several ferry services between the north and south sides. They transport bicycles and luggage at no additional cost. Clayto at Split to Split is a service the hosts personally know and use. He charges $5 BZ per person for a round-trip crossing and also offers punch-card options.
The ferry can pick up and drop off guests at the dock directly beside the property for $10 BZ per person. Luggage is transported at no additional charge. The hosts recommend arranging this service on arrival and again when departing for home.
The closest restaurants and grocery stores are at least a half-mile from Driftwood by foot or bicycle. Because of the distance and the property’s rustic setting, it may not be suitable for small children or guests with mobility issues unless a golf cart is rented.
The north side has:
- Two small grocery stores
- Five restaurants, most within 1 mile of Driftwood
Many local businesses offer free delivery or golf-cart pickup and drop-off for dinner guests.
Mosquitoes and Sand Flies
Caye Caulker has mosquitoes and sand flies, which can be particularly intense at certain times of day and during some seasons. Please bring insect repellent.
A local oil called “It Works” is effective, especially against sand flies. Coconut oil can also work well. During certain times of year, mosquitoes may be especially aggressive.
Mosquito coils are permitted outdoors only. Please place them in the provided bottles and never leave them unattended, as they can cause burns or start a fire.
Transportation to Caye Caulker
After landing at Belize City Airport (BZE), you have two options for reaching Caye Caulker.
Option 1: Domestic Flight
The quickest option is a 10-minute flight from BZE to Caye Caulker Airport (CUK) with Tropic Air or Maya Air. Round-trip tickets cost approximately $150 US and must be purchased through the airline’s website.
Option 2: Water Taxi
The less expensive option is to take a 10-minute taxi ride from BZE to a water taxi dock. The taxi costs approximately $30 US per couple. The hosts recommend San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi.
The water taxi ride takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Round-trip tickets cost approximately $37 US per person and can be purchased online in advance or in person upon arrival.
Although tickets display a specific date and time, they may be used at any time within three months of the purchase date. Tickets purchased in advance must be validated or punched at the ticket counter on the day of departure before boarding, so you will still need to join the purchase line upon arrival.
A Belize City driver is also available to meet guests at the airport and take them to the water taxi. Please contact the host to arrange this service for your group.
Arrival on Caye Caulker
Golf-cart taxis are readily available upon arrival on Caye Caulker. Ask a driver to take you to The Split, then arrange for one of the ferries to take you directly to Driftwood.

This place was the perfect tropical retreat for our group of seven travelers. Great views, comfortable beds, glorious air conditioning, and the private beach was just right for a surprise-ish wedding ceremony. Our host Jennifer was wonderful, quick with her communication and putting us in touch with locals for anything we needed. She made sure we had contacts for every need and ensured our stay went smoothly. Hugo was great as well about checking in if we had any questions, plus taking us on a bucket list outing to snorkel with nurse sharks. A couple of the bicycles could use some maintenance, but even then, you can’t really complain about free transportation. Our stay was amazing and I wish we had more time to enjoy here. My teenager is super jealous of our shark encounter, so I have a feeling we’ll be back. :) One tip for future guests: BUG SPRAY. Bring more than you think you need and cover yourself in it. But the bites are worth it to sit in that hammock at sunset!

We absolutely loved our stay at Driftwood! The property was beautiful and the rooms were very comfortable and just as pictured. We really enjoyed family dinners at the outdoor kitchen and our kids absolutely loved playing at the beach.

We rented out the entire place for our family for a week. We had an incredible stay! Driftwood is its own little secluded spot with its own beach. We used the bikes on the property to bike to the split each day and then ride the ferry across. We went snorkeling, scuba diving and exploring each day. It was so nice to have Driftwood as our hub so when we returned “Home” we felt like we were in a peaceful paradise. Anytime we had any questions we could reach out to the owner and the property manager. They were extremely helpful. The resources they gave us of contacts to talk to on the island or also extremely helpful. Driftwood provides an excellent spot for relaxation and adventure.

We loved the waterfront location overlooking the sunset. We booked all 4 units which made it intimate. To cook, it was a bit complex because the outdoor kitchen has a charcoal BBQ and only one electric burner, so making meals was quite long. However, there are a few restaurants on the northern part that are delicious and it's easy to go to the southern part which is much more lively. If we hadn't had all the units, it could have been complicated to share the kitchen with other tenants. We enjoyed the bikes for hiking in the streets which are very quiet and we had a golf cart which was useful because the road to get to the house was very muddy.

The place was fantastic! Just as advertised. We loved the local restaurants and Bliss Beach to the north. The grounds are spectacular. We didn’t use outdoor kitchen at all but had intended to. Loved the remote location away from the busy south side. Hugo and Jennifer were very responsive and helpful. The bikes were amazing! The rain made the road in a bit puddly but it made for more of an adventure. Really enjoyed it! Great spot.

We really enjoyed our stay at Driftwood. Very beautiful setting and the kayaks were great for exploring. Jennifer and Hugo were easy to communicate with. The section of road from the main road to the house was pretty rough and doable on a bike but hard to navigate around the puddles on foot. Our only issue was the outdoor kitchen was not a good fit for our family.
