A private pool, tropical garden, and rooftop pavilion define Casa Gala, a five-bedroom villa steps from Sayulita’s beach. Sleeps 10, with four bathrooms and a 10-minute walk to downtown.
Casa Gala
Casa Gala is the home featured in Gringos in Paradise, Barry Golson’s true-life account of his and his wife Thia’s adventures in Sayulita, the friends they made, and the dream house they built in this lively, charming village.
This beautiful five-bedroom, four-bathroom home includes a private pool and tropical garden within a secure, secluded walled compound. It is just steps from the beach and a 10-minute walk from downtown.
Location
Sayulita is a surfing and fishing village nestled at the edge of the jungle, approximately 40 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. After traveling throughout Mexico, Barry and Thia chose Sayulita as their home. When they returned to the United States, I took over the property and remodeled it.
Casa Gala accommodates up to 10 guests in a handsome Spanish Colonial home on Sayulita’s quiet north side. The plaza and village center are a 10-minute walk south, while the jungle and its trails are a 10-minute walk north.
Several excellent restaurants and shops are located one block away. You can purchase groceries and cervezas, rent golf carts, and book tours nearby. The house is situated on the main beach road, one block—or approximately a two-minute walk—from the ocean on the tranquil side of town. Sayulita’s main beach can be crowded during high season.
Outdoor Areas
Upon entering through the imposing wrought-iron gates, you’ll see two tall aqueduct arches. One features water cascading into the 30-by-15-foot pool.
The property also includes:
- A thatch-roofed palapa pool house with its own half bathroom.
- A secluded mini-garden hidden behind lush foliage, complete with a swing chair and fountain.
- An outdoor shower for rinsing sandy feet.
- A tropical garden and pool area surrounded by private walls.
- A rooftop pavilion with views of the village, surrounding mountains, jungle, and glimpses of the ocean through the palms.
Ground Floor
The ground floor features two beautifully appointed queen bedrooms. Each room includes:
- A custom-carved headboard and matching furniture.
- A private bathroom decorated with handmade Talavera tiles.
- Patio doors opening onto the garden and pool area.
The newly remodeled kitchen has high-end appliances and a breakfast bar. A new water filtration system provides safe drinking water and ice.
The living and dining great room features large sliding glass doors that open to the garden and pool. At night, lanterns along the hacienda wall illuminate the area.
There is also a separate television family room with:
- A large sofa.
- An extensive DVD collection.
- Netflix.
- DIRECTV.
- Air conditioning for warm evenings.
The room can be closed off for television viewing and relaxing.
Upper Floor
The self-contained upper level includes three additional bedrooms:
- A newly remodeled suite with a California king bed, lounge area, patio doors to the terrace, and a new en-suite bathroom.
- A queen bedroom with patio doors opening onto the terrace.
- A smaller bedroom with a bunk bed featuring a full-size lower bed and twin-size upper bed, plus its own sink.
The latter two bedrooms share a full bathroom. The shower and toilet are separate from the sink area.
A long terrace overlooks the pool and garden. It includes chaise lounges where you can relax, read, and observe village life.
Rooftop Pavilion
Stairs lead to a spacious rooftop pavilion on the third floor. The pavilion offers lounge and dining areas where you can enjoy the sea breezes, along with views of the village, surrounding mountains, jungle, and glimpses of the ocean.
Wrought-iron railings and lanterns enclose the pavilion, creating an inviting space for entertaining.

We stayed at Gary’s for our family reunion and loved every second of it! Firstly, I should say that every visitor should strongly consider Gary’s recommendations, as they were extremely helpful to us. Even I, who travels to Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit extensively, found his recommendations made all the difference in the world, starting with Tino’s transportation from the airport to the house. Also, Concha (the house manager) was extremely sweet and helpful. We were all so sad to leave! And I hope to stay there again soon!! Thank you, Gary and Concha!

We had an incredible stay at this Airbnb in Sayulita and couldn’t recommend it more highly. The home was absolutely perfect for our group of multiple families with kids—spacious, comfortable, and set up in a way that made it easy for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves. The location was ideal—just a short walk to the beach and close to everything we needed, while still feeling peaceful and private. The house itself was very clean and well maintained, and one detail we especially appreciated was the consistent hot water, even with a full house. That’s something you don’t always find in Sayulita. Overall, it checked every box for us. We made some great memories here and would absolutely love to come back again in the future.

Cass Gala was absolutely perfect for our two families. We had 4 adults and 5 kids The house was very spacious and the room with bunk beds was a hit with the kids. The house is in a perfect location close to the beach, downtown, pizza place and great little coffee shop. We absolutely loved our stay. Gary was a great host and answered any questions we had immediately. Five stars for sure!!!

We had an absolutely perfect stay at Gary's beautiful Spanish colonial home. It was a great location, a block from the beach and a block and at the edge of town. Gary's house quickly felt like our home for the week. We fell in love with the house and Sayulita. The pool was beautiful and pristine. It was hard to make up our mind as to whether to spend time by the pool, on the patio, the balconies, or on the terrace. Gary was very responsive and provided us with a ton of helpful information as soon as we booked. His management and cleaning team were incredibly kind and helpful. Kitchen was well stocked. Each bedroom had AC units that worked great. We would stay here and recommend it to others without any hesitation. Can't wait to go back!

We were so grateful to find this home during the war in PV. It was such a beautiful retreat. Didn’t want to leave. Gary was a perfect host helping us get set up so fast. I would love to come back asap. Don’t hesitate to book this lovely home.

The home is exactly as we expected from The listing. The property is very well equipped and maintained. The pool Is wonderful as are all of the outdoor spaces. We spent a lot of time at the house and walked over to the beach most days. The restaurant Chaman next door was our favorite. We also had chefs come to the house to cook for us twice. Both experiences were great. If the home were a little off the beaten path we might have loved it just a tiny bit more; the bustle of the town and the lively restaurant next door are noticeable. But the convenience of the location outweighs the moderate noise factor and we just employed the a/c at night to block out noise when it was an issue. Definitely a five!
