Casa Sabura, Charming Tropical Retreat
The Space
Casa Sabura is a charming Balinese-style home adorned with handcrafted furniture from Africa, Asia, and Costa Rica. Located just 1 kilometer from Playa Avellanas, one of Costa Rica's top surfing beaches, this residence offers a serene jungle setting.
The house includes:
- Three bedrooms and two bathrooms
- A private pool
- A wraparound deck with outdoor lounging areas
- Floor-to-ceiling windows encircling the home
The master bedroom features a king-size bed, while the second bedroom upstairs contains two twin beds. Both rooms have sliding doors opening onto the wraparound deck and are equipped with individual air conditioning units. The third bedroom, situated on the ground floor, has a queen-size bed and is adjacent to the second bathroom, which includes a shower.
The lush tropical surroundings create a natural ambiance where you can enjoy morning coffee while watching monkeys move through the trees and parrots fly overhead.
Location
Casa Sabura is nestled in a relatively secluded area yet remains close to several dining options, including Lola’s, one of Costa Rica’s most renowned restaurants. The town of Tamarindo is a 25-minute drive away, providing convenient access to supplies and a livelier tourist atmosphere if desired.
Amenities and Services
Guests can arrange for additional experiences such as:
- Surfing lessons
- Yoga sessions
- In-house massages
- Private chef services
The property includes a safe for securing valuables. Due to the natural environment, renting an SUV is recommended, especially during the rainy season, as roads may become difficult to navigate.
Wildlife and Important Notes
The property is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, iguanas, snakes, spiders, scorpions, and ants. While these creatures are generally harmless, some guests may find their presence unsettling. If this is a concern, Casa Sabura may not be the ideal choice, and cancellations or refunds will not be provided for encounters with local wildlife.
The owners maintain the property in its natural state to preserve the authentic Costa Rican experience, which many guests appreciate.
Cultural Note
During your stay, you will often hear the phrase "Pura Vida," which translates to "pure life" or "simple life." In Costa Rica, this expression embodies an emotion, an attitude, happiness, and a way of living that reflects the local spirit.

My family and I stayed at Alan and Sue’s place in Playa Avellanas and what an amazing place it was! From the wildlife to the authentic and slowed down pace of the town was exactly what my family and I needed! The place was clean and well cared for, and Alan and Sue were very communicative! We would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great getaway!

Our family of 5 had a fantastic stay in Playa Avellanas. The place looks just like the photos and the kitchen was well stocked. Our kids loved the pool and the hammocks. We took surfing lessons at the beach and enjoyed pizzas at the nearby restaurant. One day we saw howler monkeys from the balcony. We would definitely come back to stay.

Otima casa. Avellanas é uma praia muito bonita e tranquila, porem com poucas opções de restaurantes e mercado proximo.

This house was lovely. You can tell it was designed with love and a clear idea. We enjoy to travel to unique Airbnb's and this certainly was filled with character. The kids loved the pool and we played cards in the covered patio.

Casa Sabura is a little oasis in Playa Avenellas. Though we had a car, we could walk to all the great nearby restaurants (and there are many!). It's also a short walk to the beach. We appreciated the kitchen, two bathrooms, the cozy beds, and the surroundings. It honestly feels like you're staying in a treehouse. It has a more Costa Rican vibe than many of the newer places nearby -- so if that's what you're going for, you'll get it here. It was also great to have the pool to cool off in. If you've had too much sun elsewhere (and you will!), the pool is a little sanctuary from the sun, especially in the afternoon.

We had a great stay at Alan and Sues Airbnb. The outdoor area was superb and the beds were very comfortable. Our only complaint would be that we found the pool quite murky with a lot of brown sludge on the bottom, with no pool vacuum available. That would be our only complaint! The rest of the home was exactly as described!

This home was not available for our entire stay in CR. In hindsight, I am happy we got to diversify our trip. This house is a gem but it’s location is somewhat isolated: 20 min of gravel road to the nearest town. It’s a 40 min drive to Tamarindo. Playa Avellanas is very small with just a few convenient stores and restaurants thus planning ahead for groceries is essential. It has a gorgeous beach with great waves. The house is 1.2 km from the beach access and the famous Lola’s restaurant. It’s location is secured behind a large gate. The home is a gorgeous wooden structure with a majestic ceiling. The outdoor lounge/kitchen by the superb pool was so enjoyable. The main 2nd floor area with its well equipped kitchen and its sliding doors made you feel like you were suspended in the trees. It was so peaceful to listen to the birds and the breeze swirling in the leaves. This was a beautiful environment to end our stay in CR.

This home worked perfect for our trip to Costa Rica. The pool and outdoor space was amazing. We loved having the two rooms upstairs with the main house and the extra room downstairs because we brought my dad with us and it gave him his own space. We heard monkeys howl in the mornings and had the flexibility to either walk or drive down to the beach. Also the home had spices and oils on hand which was great given how far our you are from a full market. The only thing I wish it had was a washer and drier.
