An artisan-built lakefront cabin for 2 in San Marcos La Laguna, with sweeping lake and volcano views. Walk 10 minutes to town and enjoy shared kayaks, a swim dock, sauna, and outdoor kitchen.
The Space
This one-of-a-kind, artisan-built cabin features an outdoor seating area and exceptional views of the lake and volcanoes. Set on a large property filled with lush gardens, it overlooks San Marcos’ best—and quietest—swimming bay.
The cabin is a 10-minute walk from town along the lakeshore. Fall asleep to the sound of the water and wake to birdsong.
Guests have access to:
- Kayaks
- A stand-up paddleboard
- A sauna
- A shared massage and swimming dock
- A shared outdoor kitchen
- A beautiful yoga platform
We can also arrange airport transportation, massages, and more. Our shower is a guest favorite.
Each of the three casitas, including Count the Ways, is part of Casa Paloma, a large lakefront compound created by an American writer who named each space after one of her novels. Every detail has been carefully considered, from the 100% cotton sheets and organic soaps to the fresh flowers, local artwork and textiles, carved stone, and more.
Guest Access
The casita is located on a spacious lakefront property with what may be the most beautiful garden at the lake. The grounds feature orchids, flowers, fruit trees, and more.
Guests have direct access to the lake, as well as use of the following shared amenities:
- A swimming dock shared with guests from the other casitas
- Three kayaks
- One stand-up paddleboard
- An outdoor kitchen
- A yoga platform
- A sauna, or temescal, available for a small additional fee
To use the sauna, simply reserve a time, and our gardener will prepare it for you.
Dining
You are welcome to prepare meals in the outdoor kitchen. For a more elaborate meal, walk into the village in approximately 10 minutes or take a five-minute tuk-tuk ride. Our host, Erika, can recommend local restaurants.
Other Things to Note
Because the property is located in a lush, semitropical environment, it cannot be completely insect-free. However, our team prioritizes cleanliness, health, safety, and your overall comfort.
Although the vast majority of guests have given us five-star ratings, one past review mentioned fleas. We briefly experienced a flea issue on the property, addressed it thoroughly, and now fumigate regularly.

Incredibly beautiful location with a private jetty, etc. We haven't seen a nicer one on our many boat trips.

I really enjoyed this place! Beautiful views! The host was very responsive and gave suggestions in town! I loved the private dock and the cushioned chairs to relax by the lake. We used the kayaks which was fun! The place was also walkable to town by the shore or a quick tuk tuk ride by road. Keep in mind: the kitchen is shared. I would suggest bringing a marker to label your items you leave in the kitchen! We had a guest assume the Nutella I bought was for everyone. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place!

My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Casa Paloma. The property was stunning and located at the perfect spot to swim. The paddle boards were such a great addition and we loved the yoga area.

Joyce’s place was beautiful and as described. The “cabin,” for lack of a better word, is situated within a larger compound. Several of the other cottages were occupied when I was there, but I still felt a sense of privacy and everyone was considerate of shared spaces. The view from my room was beautiful!! The compound was also walking distance from several restaurants in town. I loved that Joyce also offers different services for pay at the compound such as a masseuse and also offers to connect you with tours such as a sunrise hike. I personally did the hike, which was challenging, but the views at the top of the mountain were worth it. I then took advantage of the masseuse, Carmen, for recovery post-hike. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Just the getaway I needed!! The only caution I would say is the compound has a lot of stairs, so if you have mobility issues, you may struggle with navigating the property.

This is a very peaceful spot right on the lake near San Marcos. We loved yoga on the outdoor platform, using the canoes to paddle around, booking massages onsite and sitting in the sauna. We cooked many meals in the little outdoor kitchen which was fun and felt like glamping.

We stayed four nights in our casita. The place is in a great location. You can easily walk to the center of the village via the shore path. The private jetty is fantastic! We felt very comfortable.
