La Hortensia is a 2-bedroom mountain cabin in Cartago for up to 5 guests, with a fire pit, grill, hot water tub, and attic balcony. Spot quetzals among oak trees near Los Quetzales National Park.
The Space
This mountain-style cabin is nestled among oak trees in the heart of the High Forest, making it an excellent spot for bird watching, including sightings of the bright quetzal. The area is rich with diverse flora and fauna, perfect for photography and relaxation. Nearby rivers include the Macho and Savegre.
The property features local estates with private walking trails and is close to Los Quetzales and Tapanti National Parks, as well as the La Cañuela Cloud Forest.
The mountain chalet offers private parking for two vehicles, an outdoor grill, and a fire pit. The main room, furnished with a wooden double bed, is located on the first floor. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances, accompanied by a dining area seating four and a comfortable living room with seating for five.
Upstairs in the attic, accessible by stairs, there is a double bed and a single bed, along with a small balcony ideal for enjoying coffee under the stars. The spacious bathroom includes a hot water tub.
Guest Access
The cabin is situated in Pueblo de la Esperanza, a quiet, small town within a biological forest reserve. It has a local convenience store (pulperia). The location is close to Tapanti National Park and only 10 minutes from Los Quetzales National Park. The Savegre River, known as the cleanest river in Costa Rica, is 25 minutes away.
Fishing for trout is available nearby in both the river and a pond. Food service is offered upon request for all meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—with room service available. Guided hikes and tours focused on quetzal sightings can also be arranged.
Other Things to Note
Since this is a high-altitude, rainy cloud forest area, it is advisable to bring:
- A sweater and waterproof jacket for outdoor hikes
- Layered clothing
- Hiking shoes suitable for mountain terrain
- Gloves and a scarf for stargazing
- A telescope, if available, for star observation
- Camera and binoculars for bird watching, especially for spotting the quetzal
- Fishing rod for trout fishing
For activities involving fire, such as using the grill or fire pit, guests should bring a lighter or matches. Firewood can be provided upon request.

The place is very nice. The cabin is as shown in the photos, with everything you need to cook and have a pleasant stay. I feel the water heater needs to work better. The place is extremely cold, and for women, it is very important to have a good supply of hot water. The heater that was provided to us worked, but it could be improved, and the pillows on the beds could be a little more comfortable. But overall, the place is wonderful. I truly recommend it, and we will definitely return.

The photos do not reflect the place. It seemed to us to be a poorly maintained place. Good service, but the place is not what the photos show. Price and value do not go hand in hand in this case.

Everything was just like the photos, and Allan provided good service. Perhaps the only thing was that there was a bit of a mess in the front area, with a hose and some cement left lying around, but otherwise, everything was very good.

A cozy a-frame cabin in the mountains, great for a quiet getaway to a rustic setting. The host was very helpful, and they can arrange home cooked meals delivered right to your cabin from the house next door! There is a trail into a patch of cloud forest right in front of the house, and across the road there is a trail down to a beautiful cloud forest creek. The cabin was cozy and comfortable, with plenty of spare blankets and a space heater for the colder nights. Will definitely be back!
