Highland Birds, Tapir Cabin
The Space
Aves de Tierras Altas is located next to the National Park and spans 3 hectares of forest and reforested land. This environment provides excellent opportunities to observe a variety of bird species and wildlife throughout the year.
The forest edges serve as reliable spots for wildlife observation. The area features diverse vegetation, including fruit trees and large hardwood trees with broad canopies. These provide ideal habitats where many species can rest, nest, or groom themselves.
Each season brings unique changes, including courtship behaviors, nesting, care of young, and predation activities.

Beautiful location for relaxing and birdwatching, toucans while we ate breakfast in the morning which was beautifully prepared by Elliette. A truly wonderful place. There was some issue with the location but it seemed to be an Airbnb glitch, if you are traveling without phone access make sure to download the correct location to access offline.

Eliette’s place was not only beautiful, but the hospitality we experienced was beyond our expectations, from providing us with delicious homemade food to telling us about her property and area conservation history. Eliette was also a prompt communicator (and spoke great English, which was helpful with my very limited Spanish knowledge). My husband and I enjoyed watching the variety of birds that would visit the property throughout the day, and walking to the Heliconias hanging bridges right up the road. Everything was perfect about our stay, and I would definitely return to Eliette’s beautiful place again!

We had the most wonderful stay at Eliette’s place. Could not have asked for anything more. It so far exceeded what we were hoping for, and I couldn’t recommend staying here more highly. It was a lovely unit as far as the interior, and you could tell that great care was taken in the quality of the construction and finishes. The covered porch was spectacular. We saw toucans one morning, and on our last morning there was an hour and a half show from a large group of howler monkeys. Incredible. The grounds are stunning. We took walks every day and it was so wonderful to feel we had such a beautiful place to explore just outside our door. Our son also loved romping around on the grounds with their sweet dog, Brea. Last, but certainly not least, Eliette is the kindest most welcoming host you could ever imagine. We loved our conversations with her and truly felt at home. The breakfast she provided each morning was an absolute treat! Thank you Eliette, for the most perfect stay.

La cabaña está en excelentes condiciones con todas las comodidades, y el terreno es un lugar increíble. Logramos ver varios animales y muchísimas aves. Además, Eliette, Diana y Luis fueron súper amables. Regresaríamos siempre. 🤍

My son and I had a really wonderful stay at Eliette's place! It is immersed in nature, yet is a short drive to town and many incredible places to experience the beauty, flora, and fauna of Costa Rica! You don't have to go far, though, to experience that! Eliette, her husband, Mark, and "many helpers" have created an extraordinary place - lovely cabins with decks overlooking lush forests and a feeder that draws a variety of birds (as well as capuchin monkeys!); walking paths through the original forest and the forest they planted. Their place is adjacent to Volcan Tenorio National Park, and provides habitat for diverse fauna. Eliette and Mark were amazing hosts! They provided delicious, abundant breakfasts each day! Eliette gave us many recommendations for things to do in the area based on our interests, and she was great at communicating! Can't say enough good things about this place and the hosts! Highly recommend! Hope to return someday!

The host Eliette was very rude to my friend upon arrival. She questioned her as if she were an escort or something of the sort. I immediately wanted to leave but local availability made me stick with the reservation. The home I reserved had two beds and the host notified me that if I were to use both beds she would have to charge me extra which is complete nonsense. Overall, the property itself was clean and comfortable with great views. It was just unfortunate to run into a host like this.

BEAUTIFUL, sat on back deck to do a lot of birding. While having our afternoon tea, the yellow eared toucan graced us with his presence. The breakfast that was included was awesome - all local and organic produce. Fell in love with their Gallo de Pinto, so much so, I was treated to a private cooking lesson to learn how it’s made. Eliette & Mark are dedicated at making their mark on the environment, cooperating with local groups for the sloths, birds, monkeys. Their knowledge of the local activities was well appreciated. The bird guide they recommended was fantastic, we got to see two lifers – the Black crested Coquette and the Tody motmot. The house was more than we expected. The kitchenette was very clean and well stocked. The queen size bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. We stayed for 11 nights and loved it. We would definitely recommend it and are returning next year for sure.

Elliette had a personal touch and it was apparent that she cared about our experience. We did not have a vehicle and she spent time ahead of our stay to brainstorm ideas on how to make the most of our time without transportation. She was familiar with the town and environment and took the time to share her wisdom and coach us on how to be good stewards of her country. The stay was unusually wet and she offered additional amenities including use of her personal space and even clothing should we have needed it. The food was made with love and started our day out with fresh local substance. The grounds were also a great space to explore and the fauna and wildlife surrounded us. She connected us with a trusted driver who really made all of our adventures possible.

We stayed at Eliette's place for two nights and our son enjoyed so much his loft bed that he didn't want to leave at the end of our stay. Everything was spotless clean from the room, kitchen and washroom. The breakfast provided by Eliette was delicious and her home made bread to die for. The property is lovely and the vegetation is lush. We spotted a variety of birds including two types of Toucans. It's not very far from Rio Celeste and close to the Heliconias trails and hanging bridges. Eliette and Mark are wonderful people and we enjoyed talking to them. We would love to come back one day.
