Casa Ranas
This gorgeous property is situated in two acres of lovely garden with big trees, lawns, and 3 ponds from which emanates an amazing chorus of frogs every evening. The land then extends back towards Corcovado with 32 acres of rainforest, with a range of mammals in it. Sitting on the veranda, the rainforest is right there and usually squirrel monkeys, trogons, aracari and toucans, moving about. At night, the kinkajou family come and visit and you can watch them from the veranda. The space • The house has 3 bedrooms plus a separate study room (can be made into another bedroom on request). It therefore will comfortably sleep 6 – 7 people. • Upstairs there is a lovely open hardwood veranda area off the toilet / bathroom / two rooms. • In the upstairs bathroom there is a gas-powered hot shower. • About 80m away from the house is a 4-bay garage with small living quarters for the hosts. • In this area there is poor mobile connection; but courtesy of the private satellite dish installed on the hill 300m above the property, there is decent wi-fi and we have just upgraded from solar-driven (works when sun out) to electricity-driven wifi so now we are proud to say, we have 24/7 wifi - we're only place for many miles around to have this. • The property is tranquil, secure and private. • White bed-linen & white towels are provided -The windows are covered in mesh. There is no Aircon (other than in the study) Guests need to book tours to Corcovado and boat tours in advance, pls email for more information The property - whilst nestled on the edge of rainforest and 'remote' in feel, is also 300m from the nearby village and easy to drive to in a normal car With the Osa being a relatively remote area, services are not what they are further north. For example, there are electricity power cuts, every once in a while eg when a tree falls on the lines somewhere. It normally comes back on in a couple of hours. Likewise, there are occasional water outages ...but again these get fixed fast. If this happens during your stay - don't panic. A couple of hours later it's normally resolved; but if worried, get in touch with one of us There's a lot of wildlife in the rainforest on the property. You can use our maintained trails. Guest access Some of the regular birds you can see in the garden are: Montezuma Oropendula; Baird's Trogon, Slaty-Tailed Trogon, Gartered Trogon; Chestnut Mandibled Toucan; Fiery-billed Aracari; Lineated and Golden-naped Woodpecker; Cocoa Wood creeper; Masked Tityra; Green and Bare-throated Tiger Heron; Green and Ringed Kingfisher; Tanagers ... Golden-hooded, Blue-gray, Bay-headed, Cherries, Summer; Tropical Kingbird; Shining Honeycreeper; Long-tailed hermit, Little Hermit, Rufous-tailed hummer; Antwrens; Red-capped and Orange-Collared Manikins; White Hawk; Thick-billed Euphonia; Roadside Hawk and Collared Forest Falcon. There's also more occasional stuff ... Like the Crested Owl Guests can access all of the garden. Please ask if you'd like a short guide to photography opportunities & walking on the 32 acres - in the garden and property land (give us your email so we can send it) Guests need permission to use any of the hides, and climbing the scaffold tower hides or ladders - in any circumstance - is strictly at your own risk. Other things to note For walking into the rainforest, suggest you borrow a pair of the boots that are on the downstairs veranda (protection from snakes) The blinds / hides are only available on request when Jim is there. Please don't assume they will automatically be available Leonidas is a local guy who will come & discretely check on the house each day, really this is for when guests are not staying there & he is checking there are no squatters and to put off any thieves. He also comes & does the garden each Saturday, using gardening equipment from the Garage

Just heading home from an excellent stay. So peaceful to just sit on the deck and watch nature take its course in front of you. A birders dream house in a natural environment. Beds super comfortable and wonderful to hear the howlers wake you up with the sun if they are around. Loved watching the daily drama with the Basilisk lizards and the Caiman when they were sunning themselves out of the water. A great spot that added to our Osa experience. Thanks Kathrin & Jim

Jim, Kathrin & Sebastian were most responsive to all our questions and provided excellent recommendations for local eats, grocery, private tour guide & onsite massage. First and second level wrap around porches with comfortable seating provided excellent views of the ponds and beautiful garden. Kitchen included all the essentials, comfortable bed with fans making for restful nights. On property garden, ridge and stream trails provided convenient early morning birding, day and night hikes. We saw as many bird, insect, mammal and reptile varieties on Jim’s property as we did on a guided hike in Corcovado NP. Remote, yet no more than 15-30 minute drive to beach, grocery & restaurants. Pick up groceries on the way in and you’ll have no reason to leave the property, until you have to!

The wildlife visible in the garden is amazing - you hardly need to visit a reserve. Early mornings and late afternoons we sat on the balcony and watched it all happen. At night the sounds of the forest envelop you. The house is well designed and furnished and the kitchen had everything we needed. We appreciated the vases of flowers. The recommended guide (Gerson) was excellent and took us on short night and early morning tours. We would certainly come here again.

We had an amazing stay here with our niece. The location is truly special and we were very happy to just sit on the terrace or in the hammocks in the ground floor and listen to and watch the wildlife. While it was very humid while we were there we were quite comfortable with the fans and didn't find it particularly buggy. Throughout our stay the hosts were extremely helpful and responsive, offering lots of helpful tips, recommendations and information. We had an unexpected disruption in our flights and they were also flexible in offering ways to help accommodate a potential extra day if needed. We cooked at the house and had everything we needed in the kitchen. We also loved Soda Leila just down the road. Playa Blanca, nearby, was a great spot for a swim at high tide. And overall we found this to be a great home base for exploring Osa. Highly recommend!

Op onze rondreis door Costa Rica hebben we 4 nachten bij Casa Ranas verbleven, helaas veel te kort om alles in de omgeving en ook het huis met fantastische tuin volledig te ontdekken. Het was heerlijk om hier te verblijven. De host was zeer behulpzaam en heeft ons aan allerlei goede contacten geholpen om de omgeving goed te ervaren.

Een heerlijke woning op een fantastische locatie midden in de natuur. Vanaf de bovenveranda heb ik genoten van alle vogels, vlinders, en van de Jezus Christ hagedissen en twee kaaimannen in de vijver. Het is een goede uitvalsbasis voor een dagtocht naar het Serina station in natuurpark Corcovado. Kathrin heeft ons een gids aangeraden die goed Engels spreekt. Boek vooral ook de rondleiding bij Finka Köbö aan het begin van de onverharde weg, die was erg de moeite waard. Tip: maak tevoren printscreens van de route instructies en de toegangscode, je hebt namelijk geen mobiel bereik onderweg.

This is a very special place. The whole property is designed for absorbing the plants and animals of the Osa peninsula. We saw aracari, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, poison dart frogs, iguanas, toucans, macaws, and many other species of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and birds. And of course we enjoyed the quiet company of Raymond the caiman. The house’s second floor veranda is a lovely place to sit. If you are visiting the Osa peninsula for watching wildlife and enjoying the rainforest ecosystem, it’s worth it to stay here for 5 days, maybe longer.

Gorgeous spot tucked in the jungle! Very wild spot and beautiful house. Was hoping to walk the property more than we did but the trails were steep and overgrown. Power and internet were spotty during our stay. Hosts were very friendly and responsive during internet issues and with restocking items.

It’s a very nice place with its own tropical garden. The house is beautiful and well maintained. However, all three bedrooms do not have air conditioner. No mention of AC is the description means NO air conditioner. With the heat and humidity and without AC, I could not get any sleep in the night. For these who can tolerate the heat and humidity in the jungle, this is a nice place to stay. For those who used to having air conditioner and can not tolerate the heat and humidity, this is not a place for you.
