We had a truly wonderful stay at Mil Flores in Matapalo. The house is beautiful, peaceful and full of atmosphere. It has that rare feeling of being both comfortable and special at the same time. Everything around the house invites you to slow down, enjoy the surroundings and just be present. For us as a family, it was exactly the kind of place we had hoped to find in Costa Rica. Matapalo itself is calm, green and stunning, and Mil Flores fits perfectly into that setting. The nature, the sounds, the space and the feeling of privacy made the stay something we will remember for a long time. Monkeys were swinging through the garden, and macaws and toucans were frequent visitors as well. It felt like the wildlife was part of the house. We felt at home very quickly, and leaving was genuinely difficult. A fantastic house in a beautiful part of Costa Rica. We would happily recommend Mil Flores to anyone looking for a special place to stay near Matapalo.

Beautiful house and property. Highly recommend for proximity to town and wildlife viewing. Staff very responsive. Stay here and you won't be disappointed!

Thank you for your stay! We hope to see you again for some more adventure in the jungle.

Everything was perfect, we would definitely like to come back sometime! The small pool was ideal for our young child to cool off quickly. A 4x4 car is definitely a must to explore the beautiful area! Like all houses in the region as far as we could see, this one also has an open-plan design for good ventilation, which works great. It allows you to spot fascinating wildlife even from the bedroom! We saw monkeys and Macaws and other local fauna, so so cool!! In the evening, when the lights are on, there are of course some jungle-appropriate bugs flying around too, but no more than you would expect in the jungle anyway so it didn’t bother us at all. The kitchen was exceptionally well equipped, the beds were large and comfortable, and the communication was super friendly and helpful. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle is a priceless experience. Having the Martinas bar restaurant nearby is also super convenient. We are already sad that we can't be there anymore!

Fantastic that you and your family enjoyed the house. It is a true jungle experience. The dipping pool makes it a blast for the kiddos.

Perfect set up, to enjoy all the Monte Carlo area has to offer. Great response of this, stocked very well, Mary, very comfortable beds. We use the mosquito netting with the fans and we’re very comfortable.

Cabo Matapalo is a very special place. It's a little piece of paradise. The house is a great spot to both enjoy the nature and have modern comforts while staying in an off grid eco-friendly home. We aim to get our guests a good nights sleep.

Such a magical space in the middle of the jungle. We spent most of our time in the kitchen, the outside deck/pool and the upstairs room/outdoor space was an absolute treat. Waking up to the sound of monkeys and being surrounded by nature was a dream. Well definitely be back :) If you’re considering between this AirBnb and another, choose this one. You’ll be happy you did.

Thanks Brian for the nice review of Mil Flores. We are happy you enjoyed the house and the pool. It was my original home and was designed for a comfortable holiday. Please come again!

If you want a Swiss family Robinson adventure, this is the place to stay! The wildlife seen from the back porch is amazing! We saw monkeys, toucans, agoutis, scarlet macaws, hummingbirds, etc. All the local people were very friendly and welcoming, including our host, Gretchen. Things to know: •Having a fan on you during sleep is important. The 2 main beds have fans on them. The additional bed has a ceiling fan nearby (but a small one would be helpful.) •Since the house is solar powered, using lights and electricity in the evening is limited so you reserve enough energy for the fans and refrigerator.—It will means keeping the house dark except for the specific room you’re in. •Bring a good flashlight for each guest!—You’ll be walking around in the dark some when you conserve energy for fans. •This is an Open Air house! It has walls but is open to the outdoors thru windows—no glass or screens. Bugs & crabs visit often. •The main floor bath has no door, just curved walls for privacy

HI Robin, we were happy to have you at Mil Flores. I am glad the wildlife did not disappoint. To address some of your concerns I would like to say that a fan is normally to be in every bed. It was an oversight from housekeeping that the small bed had no fan. Normally it would be best to notify management when something is missing from the house. Apologies that was not addressed. Yes the home is solar powered and we request people conserve energy while at the house. Too many times we have had the power go out and when arriving to turn on the generator and check on the problem we see that every fan and light of the house were in use at then same time. That type of usage doesn't work well for solar powered homes. But walking around in the dark is never encouraged in the house and by no means do we want you to feel like that is necessary. We do tell our guests to bring flashlights. As an off grid home in the remote jungle it's important to always see where you are going inside and outside of the house. It's a safety issue. As far as the open air home... it is part of the charm of the region. Without air conditioning we need to keep airflow (no screens and windows) for the comfort of the houses. We do have all of the beds with mosquito nets and fans for comfort and protection from bugs etc while sleeping. It is a jungle eco adventure. An experience like not many other place in the world where here we can still live wild and free. I appreciate your feedback always want to improve our service.

Great spot for an adventure! The beaches were challenging to swim but the river and the dipping pool was a nice place for us to all cool off. It was definitely hot sleeping but the small fans helped keep the air moving. We saw monkeys from the porch and even had a few crabs and frogs say hello in the shower. I was very pleasantly surprised with how few bugs there were, even in the evenings with the lights on. It was great spot for us to disconnect and unwind. Would certainly come again!

Thanks for the review! It's always nice for people to know the guests experience. The heat this year was a bit more than normal as the dry season lasted longer than usual. The fans in the beds are a big help since we are off grid and it is part of the eco friendly charm of remote vacations. Glad you enjoyed and we do hope to host you again.

2nd time staying here with my family and it won’t be the last. We were there for 3 weeks and I miss it dearly. It’s paradise. The house is amazing! Highly recommend

Host Response

Thanks for the recommendation Sam. Super happy you guys enjoyed and your kids made good use of the pool! See you next year.

We absolutely loved our stay at Mil Flores! The hosts were very helpful and accommodating and the house is completely unique. We loved the upstairs floor being open to the jungle with all the sounds and wildlife. The house had everything needed for a group of 6 with a fully equipped kitchen and plunge pool for hot days. The beach is very close and there is so much incredible wildlife visiting the property. We will definitely be back. Thank you Michelle and Gretchen :)

Thanks for the positive review. I’m happy you enjoyed your stay. I designed this house for a place my family could come and visit so it was meant for a group to have a great vacation and enjoy the jungle living together. Please come again!

What a special place. Visited Michelle's beautiful home in Osa with my family and we didn't want to leave. The bedroom upstairs was so relaxing with all the open windows and doors. The beds are all so comfortable...we all slept so well. The kids loved all the nature around the home...we even had Lucy's come visit us for a few days. Lucy is the freeloading dog that roams the area. She's so sweet. We did have a hard time driving around with our car...I would recommend a 4×4 If you plan on visiting. The kitchen was our favorite with a beautiful dinner table outside. Don't think twice, book your stay. We can't wait to come back. Osa you are a Gem :)

I’m so happy your family was able to come and enjoy the osa. My first trip to Costa Rica 28 years ago the osa was my last stop. I had a hard time leaving also! Please come again.

Staying at this beautiful home was the highlight of our trip. I’d visited the Osa Peninsula 20yrs ago and loved it just as much the second time around. We saw monkeys out the window everyday and dozens of macaws when we walked along the beaches. The big screens and linens were in perfect shape. Martina’s was delicious but is definitely US prices. The road was much improved 20yrs later. We took a taxi out but would have felt fine driving.

Awesome place. Trip highlights included monkey watching from the plunge pool, yoga on the covered wood deck, lush vegetation in every direction, happy hour/dinners in the indoor outdoor bar/kitchen. Great home base for a week long trip or longer :) Pro tip, leave everything in the pantry/fridge overnight as monkeys may pay a midnight visit ;) Michelle was a great host, friendly and responsive.

Host Response

Mil flores is still my favorite house. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. Please come again!
